Recently while having lunch outside with Maggie (see Pet Of The Week 9/23/2018) this girl came for a bite! Being the entomologist that I am, I had to take her picture. I was able to identify her as the Eastern Treehole Mosquito (Aedes triseriatus).
Why is she called a treehole mosquito? No, treehole is not a polite version of what you want to call her when she bites you! Treehole mosquitoes prefer to lay their eggs in standing water found in containers or other small pools of water including that which can be found puddling in holes in trees after it rains.
Why do I keep referring to this mosquito as "she"? How do I know it is a female? Because only female mosquitoes drink blood. They need the blood meal to produce eggs.
